Wrigley’s chewing gum was actually developed as a premium to be given away with other products rather than as a primary product for sale. As a teenager, William Wrigley Jr. was working for his father in Chicago selling soap that had been manufactured in his father’s factory. The soap was not very popular with merchants because it was priced at five cents, and this selling price did not leave a good profit margin for the merchants. Wrigley convinced his father to raise the price to ten cents and to give away cheap umbrellas as a premium for the merchants. This worked successfully, confirming Wrigley that the use of premiums was an effective sales tool. Wrigley then established his own company; in his company he was selling soap as a wholesaler, giving baking soda away as a premium, and using a cookbook to promote each deal. Over time, the baking soda and cookbook became more popular than the soap, so Wrigley began a new operation selling baking soda. He began hunting for a new premium item to give away with sales of baking soda; he soon decided on chewing gum. Once again, when Wrigley realized that demand for the premium was stronger than the demand for the original product, he created the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company to produce and sell chewing gum. Wrigley started out with two brands of gum, Vassar and Lotta Gum, and soon introduced Juicy Fruit and Spearmint. The latter two brands grew in popularity, while the first two were phased out. Juicy Fruit and Spearmint are two of Wrigley’s main brands to this day.

Helping at a hospital

Every year many young people in Britain finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to university . Some of them go to other countries and work as volunteers. Volunteers give their time to help people — for example , they work in schools or hospitals , or they help with conservation . Mike Coleman is 19 and lives in Canterbury in England . He wants to become a teacher , but now he’s living in Namibia . He’s working in a hospital near Katima Mulilo . He says , ‘ I’m working with the doctors and nurses here to help sick people . I’m not a doctor but I can do a lot of things to help — for example , I help to carry people who can’t walk . Sometimes I go to villages in the mobile hospital , too . There aren’t many doctors here so they need help from people like me . I don’t get any money — but that’s OK , I’m not here for the money . I’m staying here for two months and I’m living in a small house with five other volunteers . The work is hard and the days are long but I’m enjoying my life here . I’m learning a lot about life in southern Africa — and about myself ! When I finish the two months ‘ work , I want to travel in and around Namibia for three weeks — for example , I want to see the animals in the Okavango Delta in Botswana .

General Travel Vocabulary Activity

Yes, I have done a decent amount of travelling. During my childhood, we generally went on cruises because my parents love the sea and they wanted to go to more than one destination during the same trip. When I was 21, I went backpacking around Central America for three months. I had to be quite frugal because I didn’t have much money but staying in shared rooms in hostels rather than hotels made it affordable. It was definitely not as luxurious as being on a cruise ship because you have to carry your entire luggage around when you move from city to city. However, the scenery I saw when I went to the volcanoes in Nicaragua and Guatemala made up for the lack of comfort because it was so dramatic.
